How is everyone coping through this time our lives? I am still healing from surgery and will not be able to start creating again until after the first of the year. I am so looking forward to getting lost in clay work again. I pray all of you are well!

The leaves are beginning to change, the air has a crisp smell, and I am hopeful for us all.

May you have health, peace, and laughter.

New pieces in the works

Karan Simpson

With all of the schedule changes and life transitions, I think I’m finally getting settled into a more productive work routine. This time of year I’m usually spending a great deal of time in the local schools, but with the world in the state it is in now, school has been cancelled. Days and times are filled differently and feel differently, but resets are not always a bad thing.

Enjoy watching a bit of the design and decorating of the mishima process, which consists of carving the clay pieces (I wax my pieces before carving) and then inlaying the carving with either slip or underglaze before bisque firing. The serving tray is part of my Camellia Mandala line in my Doodle Ware collection. The spice shaker is included in my Doodle Ware collection as well.

Stay safe, stay home!

Sketching a carving design for a cracker tray : Video

Karan SimpsonComment

For grins, as I’m working on a small batch store update. I thought I would share a bit of the process of something I’m currently making, a serving tray for crackers (or olives, or cheese squares, etc. etc.). :)

The overall carving design I planned for the tray is 9.5” L x 2” W. I wanted to create a vine similar to one of the rings in my new line of hand carved bowl and serving ware designs (shown at the start of the video). My process for spacing and alignment for the design is demonstrated along with how the sketch is drawn and marked on the tray, and the completed carving.

Video does not have sound, but I hope the steps can be followed easily should anyone like to do so. I’ll be glad to answer questions about the process if you’d like to comment or send me a message. I’ll graduate to sound and verbal input soon… once I get used to the sound of my voice.

Ya’ll stay safe out there!

This is how the pigs roll...

Thanks to all for the great response to the last shop update. The shelves are empty! I’m busy working to fill them up again with custom orders and pieces for the next shop update scheduled for late October 2019.

In early December I’ll be participating in a pop up shop in Nashville. I’m very excited to be working with some exceptionally sweet people on this one. More details to follow!

While you’re waiting, check out one of the demo videos I’m working on for making the drove of piggy banks coming up. More to come!

It's the month of Mom!

Karan Simpson

Firstly, if your mom is no longer with us here, may the longing and sadness this time of year may bring to you yield to the comfort of remembrances of shared laughter and joy and, most of all, love. My hope is that new traditions abound of honoring your mother or mother figure that also honors yourself. Peace to your heart.

May 12th is the day set aside to celebrate the mothers and mother figures in our lives. The calendar gives her one day, but I’ll give her (and you) the entire month! Mom’ing is not for the faint of heart. Treat your mom, grandmother, or anyone that has been a mother to you with a gift that matches their uniqueness; functional, hand crafted art that will bring a smile to their face with each use. Treat yourself to 10% off all orders through May 31, 2019. (Gift card purchases are excluded, however, the purchases made with the gift card are not!)

I’ll be adding a few new pieces throughout the month as well. I have some egg trays drying so we’ll see how that goes. Egg trays as in the kind used for serving deviled eggs, not the kind for storage. Those may be on the horizon as well, though. Ah, the life of a small batch potter.

On a personal note, I’d like to thank these guys for making me a mom! I’m really happy we all survived your teenage years! And your twenties, and your thirties. xoxo

Lastly, thank YOU for supporting the arts, however you may do so. Your support of my art allows me to keep pounding out the clay and serving the needs of others. It’s a joy and a job so although I would be happy to give everything away if I could still eat and work and keep a home, it is an amazing feeling to think my art has touched someone deeply enough that they’d trade me their hard earned money in exchange. I am not ashamed to admit that I’ve done a little happy dance with every sale. So, whether it’s my art or another artists’ work in any medium or format, your support can, will, and does provide joy, sustenance, and sometimes relief and validation when it’s most needed. You’re the best.

New Inventory

Karan Simpson

I’ve been testing some new glazes on my last kiln load. After getting them all laid out on the table, it appears I am ready for spring! I’m in the process of photographing them all, but had to stop and share this one. I am smitten. This is a large serving bowl (8.5” diameter x 3” H) in my Memmie’s Lace Collection. The color reminds me of the hydrangeas she grew by her front door. It’s going to be hard to let this one go!
